2024 PLANET VIRGINIA REPORT

Under cloudy skies and cooler temperatures hovering around 50 degrees, more than 3,000 people attended Planet Virginia on Sunday, April 21st, 2024 in Herndon, Virginia, as the first stop on the Planet Series Events Tour. This Earth Day festival featured fabulous food and eco-friendly products from more than 80 vendors, music, as well as, an electric car show, companion animal adoption opportunities, and inspiring talks from some of the most prominent voices in the whole food plant-based, environmental, and animal rights movements.

Starting with a 10:00 AM introduction and welcome from Lisa DeCrescente, Director of the Planet Series Events, and Jeff Bentley, CEO of NorthWest Federal Credit Union (where the event was held), announcements, giveaways, and special guests continued to delight audiences from the main stage until 5:00 pm with such notable speakers as:

  • Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s founding president Neal Barnard, MD
  • Farm Sanctuary’s Co-founder Gene Baur
  • Climate Diet’s Executive Director Jane DeMarines
  • Greenfare Organic Cafe’s CEO and owner Gwyn Whittaker 
  • Cooking demo by comedic cooking show hosts Sisters Serving U
  • Washington DC rapper and youth educator Javier Starks
  • PLNT Burger’s founder Jonah Goldman
  • Global Roots’ president and founder, and CEO of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, LeAnne Campbell
  • U.S.Congressman Gerry Connolly, representing the 11th District of Virginia 
  • Plant-based cardiologist and plant-based advocate Dr. Kim Williams

The event was emceed by Eric C Lindstrom, author of The Skeptical Vegan and Raising Vegan Kids and Executive Director of Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), who co-hosted the event with the support of Greenfare, Climate Diet, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

During the day, attendees migrated from the main stage to the multi-cultural variety of regional cuisines and educational-focused booths all dedicated to healthy living for humans, the planet, and animals. Some notable vendors included:

  • Just Ice Tea

  • The Vegan Factory

Other vendors sold vegan baked goods, plant-based burgers and fries, ice cream and popsicles, soaps, and other eco-friendly products.

This family-friendly event included a dedicated kids’ area where My Farm Friends coloring books were available along with games, Fairy Hair in Maryland, Hila Face Painting, farmed animals from Peaceful Fields Sanctuary, PetConnect Rescue, and a bubble machine. DJ Soul played music throughout the day near the electric car show and the Mad Magic Kombucha bar. 

Attendees were encouraged to enter to win prizes throughout the day, and hundreds of email addresses were acquired; names were drawn for a Hotbins composter, valued at $600, A $100 gift card to DC Vegan, and a vegan wallet set from Doshi. The attendees were all sent an event survey with vegan support links and more information about the upcoming Planet events. They had this to say about Planet Virginia:

“I love having all of the vegan food vendors in one place, it is such a treat to have such variety to choose from!” 

“New & variety of vendors like Doshi, Crème de la Crop, Chiboo. PLNT Burger chili was the best! Mad Magic Kombucha mocktails were delicious. DJ Soul was cool. E-vehicles were great as well.”

“Very good speech from Dr. Barnard, good variety of vendors, did not feel too crowded.”

“Good food, a decent variety of vendors, and the dogs. I also liked learning about the variety of electric vehicles.

Planet Virginia is th first of the 2024 Planet Series Events Tour stops and was sprouted from Fairfax Veg Fest which had a successful five-year run under the guidance of Gwyn Whittaker from Greenfare Organic Cafe. Past events featured high-profile speakers and more than 85 vegan and plant-based vendors. The Planet Series Events Tour continues with Planet Maryland on June 2nd, Planet Delaware from September 13-15, and concludes  2024 with Planet DC in downtown Washington, DC on October 20

Planet Virginia was further supported by FARM, Hampton Inn and Suites, Custom Ink, Veg Society of DC, and a donation from the Town of Herndon.
